Happy Third (and last!) Trimester!
Whew! Last week was a BUSY week. This week, we'll be enjoying reading for reading month, and getting back into our routines.
*Please remember to sign and return the empty report card envelope! We will use them to mail out the final report cards in the summer!!
Science Fair Projects: Information came home in Friday Folders about the upcoming Science Fair Projects. These are not required but are encouraged (the classroom with the most projects brought in gets a donut party)! Please see the peach colored paper that came home for more information including helpful websites to help you in choosing a project.
Reading Passports: "March is Reading Month" is well underway. I am encouraging ALL students to work on earning raffle tickets with their Superhero Reading Identity Cards each week. These cards went home on Thursday and are printed on bright yellow card stock. The 20 minutes of nightly reading can be incorporated into these tasks! Raffle tickets are given for those students who complete genre squares (signed by an adult). Prizes include new books! Please encourage your student to keep track and celebrate the joy of reading! Superhero Reading Identity Cards can be stamped for raffle tickets beginning Wednesday, 3/11/20.
Science: We finished our Human Machine unit and will now be beginning a new unit called, "The Birth of Rocks: Rock Cycle and Earth's Processes".
Here's an excerpt:
This unit takes the perspective that every rock has a story. Students will develop an appreciation for the processes that shape the Earth's surface. After considering where volcanoes form and how they erupt, they turn to investigations of rocks breaking apart and creating potential hazards. Through hands-on investigation, students explore the world of rocks and design ways of protecting humans from their dangers.
READING/ELA: Students are finishing up their Third Trimester skills screener. Through this in-depth assessment, I will be able to form small groups to target instruction to their needs. Our whole group lessons will focus on the skills of identifying cause and effect comparisons, making personal connections to text, and writing in the cause/effect text structure!
It's also READING MONTH, so we'll be adding in lots of fun activities along the way!
Cold and Flu season: As you've probably heard on the news, many school districts around us continue to get hit hard by influenza. Symptoms include fever, headache, lethargy, and upper-respiratory congestion. Please remember if you child has a fever, he/she must be fever free (without the aid of medicine) for a full 24-hours to return to school. We are wiping down our desks regularly and encouraging hand washing! Our superintendent is monitoring our attendance numbers, but as of now we are seeing attendance typical for this time of the year.
