Fall/Halloween Party:
Our class Fall/Halloween party will be held on Thursday October 31! In our room, we do a variety of “centers” rather than a big party. For each party, I will need one parent to head the party and contact the other signed up parents to coordinate what each center will consist of. I will also need 3 or 4 other parents to help run each center. I will time the centers and make sure that things are running smoothly on the day of the party.
If you'd like to sign up for the Fall/Halloween Party, please leave your name on the sign up form HERE.

What we are learning about this week:
Reading/ELA:
This week, we are beginning to work on identifying the sequence of events within a text. We are identifying and using signal language (first, next, then, finally, etc) to order the events within a passage.

Math:
We are working into the last few lessons of our first math unit! This week, we are learning about traditional U.S. subtraction, converting between yards, feet and inches and exploring properties of points, line, line segments and rays.
We should be finishing up the unit early next week; a study guide will come home a few days before the test. Please take a moment to review with your child. After the test, you will receive the next Family Letter and Home Link packet.

It is very important to continue to work on solidifying those multiplication and division facts through 12! Being able to recall these facts will be very helpful as we work into our future math units.
Science:
We've started our science unit called "Energizing Everything!" This introductory energy unit will encourage students to think about the energy that things need to move. Students will explore how energy makes things go, from powering vehicles to moving one’s body. Students will experiment with rubber band racers to discover the relationship between how much energy is stored in a material and how much is released. They will investigate the role that hills play in making roller coasters move and the energy transfer that happens when two objects collide. Students will realize that thinking about the world in terms of energy helps them make sense of how and why things speed up and slow down. Hands-on activities focus on engineering, testing hypotheses and using results to develop their ideas.
SMART Time:
We will be starting our SMART time this week! SMART time is all about teaching students in small groups to give them targeted instruction to meet their learning goals. Throughout SJPS, teachers are analyzing student data and scores to pinpoint the areas that students need to strengthen. By grouping students with like needs, teachers will offer targeted lessons. We are building SMART time into our daily schedules and these small groups will be led by classroom teachers (Mrs. Nimtz and myself) along with our Title I staff who will come to our rooms to work alongside us. We are looking forward to providing this enriching opportunity to our learners!
