Winter Clothing:
Just a quick reminder, as the days are getting colder, that students go out for recess 3 times per day (morning, lunch, afternoon). Please ensure that your child is dressed for the weather. Our playground tends to be very breezy! Students will stay inside for indoor recess if it is rainy or if the temperature is in the single digits.

An important note from Mrs. Bawk's blog this week...
24 Hour Fever & Vomit Free Rule
When  reporting your child’s illness to the school, we need to know what specific illness is affecting your child, including symptoms.  This allows us to accurately complete our weekly report for the Berrien County Health Department. Please help us prevent the spread of illness here at school by remembering that your child has to be fever free (without medication) and vomit free for 24 hours before returning to class. Thank you!

What we are learning about this week:

We are nearing the end of the first trimester of school (November 15). Over the next 2 weeks, we will be assessing the standards that will appear on the first report card. Please remember, we work continuously on standards throughout the year.

Reading/ELA:
We will be learning about types of non-fiction text structures! We will use Google Classroom to create a digital flip book about the structures of: compare/contrast; cause/effect; order/sequence; problem/solution; description.

Math:
Our SJPS district scores for fact fluency are reported in both multiplication and division. Proficiency is actually a Michigan Common Core 3rd grade standard (by the end of the year), and we continue to score in fourth grade as well.

Our district scores for both multiplication and division (used by all SJPS fourth grade classrooms) are recorded using this guideline:
2 minute time/50 problems
1 (not proficient)= 1-25
2 (partially proficient )= 26-39
3 (proficient/meets standard) =40-47
4 (mastery) = 48-50 correct

In an effort to increase student fact-fluency success, we are starting the Multiplication Station this week. Any student who has not yet achieved a score of "3" (proficient) on the multiplication timed tests will be expected to work on flashcards to gain automaticity of the facts. Those students who have already attained the score of a 3 or 4, are still invited to participate (but not required) to keep those facts sharp! Once students have gone through all of the flashcard sets, he/she will move on to division facts.

SEL (Social Emotional Learning) with Mrs. Van Hekken:
I can identify peer, home and school supports to help solve problems.

Junior Achievement:
We've been having so much fun learning about being an entrepreneur from Mr. Roberts through our Junior Achievement classes. We have 2 more classes this week!
