Scholastic Book Orders (Due 10/14):
I'll be putting in our October order tomorrow (10/14) right after school! Ordering books is completely optional! Each book that is ordered helps our classroom earn books for our class library.
If you are ever interested in ordering books as a gift and want me to set them aside for you to pick up, please let me know.
You can click the following link to place an order through our class ordering page: https://orders.scholastic.com/L63HX

What we are learning about this week:
Reading/ELA:
This week, we are finishing up our unit on identifying the sequence of events within a text. We are identifying and using signal language (first, next, then, finally, etc) to order the events within a passage.
Word Study:
This week, we are working on the "Challenging Plurals" understanding that:
-Some words ending with o add -s to form the plural (studio-->studios)
-Some words ending with o add -es to form the plural (potato-->potatoes)
-Some words ending with o add -s or -es to form the plural (buffalo-->buffalos or buffaloes)
-Some words keep foreign spellings of the plural (larva-->larvae)

Math:
This week we are finishing up Unit 1. In the last 2 lessons, we will be learning about the properties of angles, triangles and quadrilaterals and using the area formula for finding the area of squares and rectangles.
A study guide will come home on Wednesday and the test will be on Thursday for Unit 1. You can begin to study for the test by reviewing the Home Link packet. After the test, you will receive the next Family Letter and Home Link packet.
Unit 2 will begin next week and will focus on multiplication and geometry. We will be covering: area of rectangles, factors, multiples, prime and composite numbers, units of time, number stories and classifying triangles and quadrilaterals.

It is very important to continue to work on solidifying those multiplication and division facts through 12! Being able to recall these facts will be very helpful as we work into our future math units.
Science:
We've started our science unit called "Energizing Everything!" This introductory energy unit will encourage students to think about the energy that things need to move. Students will explore how energy makes things go, from powering vehicles to moving one’s body. Students will experiment with rubber band racers to discover the relationship between how much energy is stored in a material and how much is released. They will investigate the role that hills play in making roller coasters move and the energy transfer that happens when two objects collide. Students will realize that thinking about the world in terms of energy helps them make sense of how and why things speed up and slow down. Hands-on activities focus on engineering, testing hypotheses and using results to develop their ideas.
SMART Time:
During SMART time this week, we will finish up our place value lessons and form new groups based on our multi-digit addition and subtraction assessment.
